Default Retune after removing header with Cat?

Hey All,

Thanks up front for any info.

I have a 2011 FLHX with 32K on it. I have a SE Heavy Breather and V&H slip-ons. After putting the SE and slip-ons on the bike, had it professionally tuned at an Indy with my SE Racing Tuner.

I would like to put a set of V&H headers on the bike (current stock headers). Question: Do I need to re-tune the bike just by putting new headers on?

I've heard that the catalytic does not reduce air flow, but not sure if the airflow is the same if there is no cat. Removing the cat to reduce the heat and get better sound.

Question 2: If it's ok not to do a tune, what about the V&H Power Duals?

Thanks again all!

Obviously, the best results would be a retune..... but...

I think you will be OK (safe) if you don't retune it and with a street cruiser riding style, probably won't feel the difference if you did retune it.

I put a stage II (a/c, se255cams, SE slip-ons) on my '12 Ultra. I got a PowerVision tuner from Fuelmoto. They sent me a map for my mods. I mentioned I would be adding their 2-1-2 header in the near future. He mentioned that I could use the same tune when I switched to their header... FWIW

Good luck & enjoy...!

Thanks, Hatt!

How do you like your SE255's? I was thinking of doing the same thing. I need to go ahead and replace the cam chain tensioner shoes, and figured I might as well replace the cams while I'm in there. Was also thinking of replacing the plate with a SE plate…has the high capacity oil pump on it.

Thanks!

They are fine, certainly better than stock. They really shine when cruising 2-up with the lady on a trip. I must admit, I only used the 255s because I was riding the bike cross country right after the 1K service and wanted to keep the warranty in place....

Now that the warranty is over, I'm looking at Woods-222, Andrews 54 or Andrews 57.... The 255s are good enough that I'm not in a big hurry to swap them out.

Just curious... you need to change the cam tensioner shoes?
You have the new hydraulic style, they shouldn't be worn out at 32K...

Good luck...

Re-tune. I spoke with Steve at Fullsac about spreading out my stage 1. First muffler and air cleaner then later adding the headpipe. He said I could do that but another tune would be recommended otherwise the bike would be running lean.

Hey Hatt,

Yeah, it's a bit early…heard around 50K is when the shoes need replacing. But there are enough horror stories out there that make me do early maintenance on just about everything. I do have the hydraulic tensioners, both in the cam and primary. I've been using synthetic since it's 1K service, so I'm pretty confident that a failure is not anywhere near eminent.

It all really comes down to making some big decisions. I've been thinking about trading in for a new bike, and have to make the decision on whether to invest in new gear for the bike, or cut the losses and upgrade to a 2014.

After test riding yesterday, I realized that if I want to stick with Harley, the bike I want is in my garage. What I did like about the 2014 Rushmore bikes is the torque response. I can get the same thing if I just do some improvements to the cam. I've invested so much time in my bike, and it's become an extension of me when I ride. I would have to do so much work to a new bike just to get it close to what I have now.

So, I figured I would go ahead and replace the shoes since I'm in the cam anyway. And, of course, while I'm giving the VISA card a workout, I might as well get the headers I want…and some LA Chopper Prime Apes…and….
