Use a good synthetic oil and don't worry about it, your motor will be just fine!

I wouldn't worry about the temp. When it's 95 degrees an air cooled engine is hot. Just ride.

I've got the oil temp gauge. It's a little more useful than that air temp gauge. But all the guys above are right. It's interesting to watch, but I don't fixate or worry about it. I've got good oil, it'll be fine. We don't get much stop and go traffic in East Texas. The highest I've ever seen the oil temp was 290* at about 13,000' just below the summit of Pike's Peak. Normally in the summer, it runs 230-250*.

I have found that once the bike has built up some heat, it takes forever to get it to cool back down.
