Question Gears not engaging.

08 Ultra with 38k and no previous mechanical issues. Started bike this morning with intent of taking a nice ride on a very pleasant day, placed in first gear with customary "clunk", let out clutch: no movement whatsoever. Made sure in first gear. still no movement. tried same in 2nd and 3rd but no go. pushed bike back into garage. took off derby cover. clutch feel and clutch release plate movement normal. shifter rod movement normal. Noticed that I could roll bike with transmission supposedly in any gear. read service manual but not enough troubleshooting information. searched subforum for primary/transmission/driveline/clutch issues but without any success as to possible issue(s) and/or fixes. I have limited knowledge of inner mechanical workings.

Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If y still have the primary cover off have someone roll the bike while u look at the clutch. If the shaft is spinning in the middle then the clutch is gone. If the shaft isn't spinning then most likely trans failure

My guess clutch is toast

Do you have IDS? Is the rear drive belt spinning?

as suggested, opened it back up. put it in first and wouldn't you know, it would not roll!! same in 2nd. put it back together, started it up with use of neutral rather than pulling in clutch. put in first with a louder "clunk" than usual and bike moved as normal. did this 4 times and couldn't duplicate prior issue. in my mind, all this has done is create more questions. really do not want to chance this problem while out on a ride.

Came home from work this afternoon. Decided to take a chance that all was well. Nope.
Reckon I'll be trailering it to a good friend who has a lot of experience with HD issues.
