Problem not solved. Re-occurred this afternoon.

started bike in neutral. placed into first with usual "clunk". let out clutch all the way. bike did not move. put in second. same result. no slack in clutch movement. removed derby cover and clutch resistance plate moves as normal. belt fine. reckon next step is to drain fluids and open it up. guess a blown clutch could be culprit, but no prior symptoms for this.

If you are carefull you can lay bike on left side and take cover off right side of tranny and look at ball and ramp . Maybe something messed up.

Wouldn't have thought of laying it over. However, Fluids just about due for change anyways. Not sure about function of ball and ramp. Will review service manual and make some inquiries. Thx for suggestion.

stripped splines on your clutch hub or your final drive pulley would be my guess.

Stop the engine, select a gear and push the bike. You should be able to hear where the problem comes from.

slight rubbing noise when pushed in 1st and 2nd. appears to be more noticeable on left side.

have yet to drain fluids and completely open everything.

why i would put my money on the trans pulley is when you put it in gear you still have the clunk noise meaning the trans is most likely shifting. no splines in trans pulley, no go! normally when the pulley is loose there is a leak, but if it's still tight and just stripped out it may not.

Since you have both 'clunk' and 'rubbing noise' your clutch plates are connected to the crankshaft and to the rear wheel. It seems your clutch plates remain loose or don't receive the full pressure.
A clutch may have insufficient travel when it's cable has no slack; you can feel the pull from the pressure plate but cannot release it completely.
