Default Fuel Range Function (r###/Lo) inaccurate after speedo change

Hi All,

I am hoping that the collective wisdom of the forum can help with an annoyance I have going. This winter I did a speedo swap on my 09 FLHP where I changed from the 5" console unit to a 4" MPH/KPH unit that sits next to my tach between the bars.

That build is detailed here.

Prior to the swap the Fuel Range Function worked as described in the manual:

When the countdown got to "Lo" the bike would take greater than 5 gallons.

After the swap the fuel light and countdown seems to come on about a gallon early. For about 6 tanks of city driving if I fill up at "Lo" the bike is taking 4 gallons or less. In addition, right after a fill up the range is indicating only 200 miles. I seem to remember prior to the swap it would read ~240 miles.

The tank fuel gauge also appeared pretty accurate both before and after the swap. When the Fuel Range Function is reading low, the tank is still showing above the red section.

While I was doing the speedo project, the tank was off the bike and nearly empty for several weeks...I don't know if this could be a factor. Also, the bike is due for a fuel filter change so the tank has not been opened since it left the factory.

Anyone have any ideas on why this happening?
Does the speedo do the calculation of the range or does this come from the ECM?
Could I have a sending unit issue inside my tank?

Thanks for any input on this!

My guess would be that it has to do with the unit inside the tank and not the speedo

I need to have the fuel filter changed and when that is done it looks like I need to pick up #12 (pn 75205-08A) shown here to go with it.

Suggestion

If you still have your 5 inch speedo plug it back in if you can

I don't know how you extended you harness so this may be a un realistic suggestion

See if the range to empty reads differently

That is a great suggestion. The how was extended is linked in my original post. The original speedo now just has the #1 logo under the glass. When I got caught in a rain storm a few weeks back the area under the glass began to fog just like the gauge did.... I have been meaning hot glue the glass to that piece of black plastic the #1 sits on to seal it from moisture and when that is being done I can plug the original speedo into the extended wire.
