  • I carry a small slime compressor and a stop and go plug kit. Its easy to use and works very well. (I keep it in a small box wrapped in bubble wrap. I had one fall apart rattling around in my saddlebag.)
  • I wouldn't carry the extra gas. I usually stop at 120-150 miles to stretch some and pee so I top off whether I need to or not.
I actually bought a Road Zeppelin for the trip hoping to remove some of the bumble bees out of my ****. I did a 1k mile trip 2 weekends go and it seemed to help.

We are planning for 1100+/- a day but weather permitting. On the nicer days we may run over some to have a little bit in the bank so to speak in case we hit crappy weather.

I'd like to add something about this kind of riding. If you ain't in the seat you're getting behind. Range is really a big deal. 200 mile range vs 150 means about 18 more fuel stops which average close to 20 minutes by the time you stretch take a leak, buy a bottle of water... that's an extra 6 HOURS spent sitting at the pumps. 6 hours at 70mph = 420 miles of lost ground. If you hold 6 gallons and you stop and put 3.8 in your cheating yourself.

Another thing that may sound obvious is don't stop if you're not tired.

Not trying at all to sound like a know it all, just a passionate rider with a lot of experience in this type of ride. Best to you and can't wait to read about your success!

Excellent points especially if you're going for an Iron Butt certificate. The documentation may be a little bit of pain but I'd sure go for it if I was doing the ride.

I created a spreadsheet to calculate gas stops for our IB1000 and BB1500 where time is a little more pressing as you really can't make it up over a couple days. It showed that more speed and less gas mileage was a better option. I used the best and worst MPG we have received on various trips so I could calculate best/worst case scenarios such as a steady uphill climb from Dallas to NM with a head wind which we had one time.

For example, 1500 miles with 7 stops (40mpg) at 65 mph is a total of 25.25 hours. 1500 miles with 10 stops (30mpg) at 75 mph is a total of 22.8 hours. This is figuring an average of 15 minutes per stop. During our other long distance riding of 700+ miles, we averaged 15 minute stops.

Word of caution.....IMHO this type of ride needs to be done solo. Everyone rides his own ride. Too dangerous to try to push it one more exit just because your partner can make it. A SS or even a BBG is one thing but what your about to do is crazy. After your fourth day of 1000+ miles a day you are mentally exhausted. Try to work your way up to it. One more thing, RIDING WEST INTO THE SUN SUCKS! https://www.hdforums.com/forum/road-...me-w-pics.html
