trying to help a friend - stock exhaust
#11
I left the screens and packing on my RKC. It is not blowing out or causing an issue. I took some high heat black paint and painted the inside where I cut the ends out as the packing is white. I am happy with my performance and sounds after gutting the cat and removing the baffles.

Good friend bought a SG last year and he is running the stock exhaust but he wants it too be louder. Guy works 10+ hours a day 6 days a week supporting 3 kids and a wife and doesn't have spare money for exhaust.
He wants me to help him de-cat and drill out baffles in his stock system.. First, i know how to de-cat a pipe but what about the baffles... never heard of this being done, is it possible and what does it sound like?
Any info would be appreciated.

I gave him a set of Xied and will install those this weekend. After that he can go have the ecm flashed.
Guy just wants his bike to sound like a Harley...

If you're going to run gutted mufflers I suggest leaving the Cat intact. You need some back pressure and the Cat will provide just enough.I'm currently running a Street Glide 2 into 1 with an American Customs Bomber with no baffle which is exactly the same as gutted stock muffler and it runs and sounds good. When I tried running the Bombers with no bafles on my de-catted stock 2 into 1 into two I got allot of decel popping and could not dial it completely out with my Vieds.

Finished this up last night in about 20 mins...
I've read posts on here about the pipes sounding "tinny" without the baffles and loss of torque or HP and this just isn't true.
I run a Thunderheader on my bike and this is about 1/3rd less noisy. A lot of slip on pipes are louder than this mod.
Nice deep rumble, no decel pop and with the addition of the Vied had green lights in about 5 mins of run time.
The Cat is still in and will remain in. I can't recommend this enough for guys on a tight budget, it's clean, simple and extremely easy to handle in under an hour.
Basic tools : 3" hole saw, drill, die grinder, black heat paint. Total cost $18.00
Thanks for the posts in this thread.
