Upgrade from 96 to 103 on a 2008 Ultra Classic
#12
Harley 103" stage II has proven to be very reliable on our both 07 and 08 Ultra classics for last 100K miles combine better fuel mileage and adequate performance. For touring it's plenty of power to tackle any uphill or headwinds and that what was missing on stock 96". But you need ACR to reduce wear and tear on other equipment and an oil cooler will help with some heat issues. Try to negotiate for price though.

So your buddies 110, that was a stock CVO motor I assume that got 100k? How many miles have you gotten on the 107 and what type of riding has it had?

Took my 96 to 103 for under $300 like $160 for stock harley 103 pistons and gaskets and $140 for bore with torque plates and hone. Labor I done my self like working on a Briggs very simple it is not worth $2 a hour to work on one of these out dated motors. On the 107 if you buy FM trick cylinders it will be great but a bored stock cylinder is mighty thin good way to get hot spots and out of round but to each his own. Come on guys these things are harleys nothing special the $20000.00 dollars plus is the name, shinny paint, and chrome and is as complicated as a Briggs&Stratton. Here is my Briggs hid by shinny black paint, wheels and chrome got a little tied up in this under engineered bike I call it my $15,000.00 BRIGGS.

Bagman, sorry, CVO had stage 1, aftermarket headpipes. no personal experience with a 107, another good friend has 60k on his 106 S&S motor on an 02 RK. I do have 79k great troublefree miles on my 09 stage 1 96, uses no oil between 5k oil changes. Best performance mod is downshifting!

Sound advice. Stressing the cases and crank shortens engine life. Even 103 can be a bit much depending on the cam. But you ride less than a few thousand miles a year, long engine life might not be an issue.
