Default Torquing Rear Axle Nut

Had the new Metzelers mounted and went to install the wheels last night. Front went textbook. The rear axle nut requires 95-103 lbs torque. Following the book, adjusted the belt with 20 lbs torque on the axle nut and then torque to final spec. Could not figure a way of holding left side axle while torquing the axle nut. Since I only have 1-36mm socket, my only choice was...a 24" pipe wrench. My helper...the wife. I then had elusions of the the wife loosing grip and dinging the tins. I immediately aborted mission and decided to come here and gain wisdom from the elders. How do you guys do this chore?

With a second, appropriate wrench. After 60 pounds or so, you don't need to hold the opposite side, at least on my machine.

I usually tighten until I think I need the torque wrench, then the opposite side stays put.

Isn't there a 36mm in the HD saddlebag tool kit?

I bought a pair of axle nut wrenches from HD, makes rear wheel and belt maintenance hassle free.

Or you could just go to Sears and buy another 36mm socket. That's what I did.

the tool from JIM'S works good, it lets you dail in the belt and then keeps the axle in position while torquing the axle. it could be alittle beefer though.

I bought 2 of the long handle 36mm wrenches off Ebay for $19 each, made this job a piece of cake. 10 minutes and I was done. Took longer to get the bags off and my tools set up than to actual adjust the belt!!!
