Default Air Cleaner Help

Hey all. Last weekend I removed my air filter (K&N type) and proceeded to clean it and per the instructions. I've done this many times on my vehicles but this is the first time on my bike. Anyway, I must have been a bit over-zealous with the oil because I noticed yesterday that it's dripping out of the "football". I stuck my finger in there and came out with a red stub. I didn't think I applied that much but apparently I did.

So the question is, should I just clean it up for a couple weeks until the drip subsides or is it worrisome enough to warrant pulling the filter and do it all over again - without getting carried away with oil, of course. Suggestions please...

with the extra oil, it'll run a little rich. ( and the instructions make mention of this as i recall *)

you can remove the cover and pat it with a paper towel and wipe out the inside lip of the cover.

it'll be fine whether you wipe it or not.

* I had to smog my 74 Blazer a few weeks ago, i made the mistake of cleaning and oiling the K&N a few days before testing and failed on hydrocarbons- I removed the filter and passed next round- reinstalled filter for the drive home. oops

There's a reason the auto industry ditched oiled air filters in the fifties. Some still think it's the cats meow. I'll stick with the dry filters .

well I have stellar results with oiled filters.

I am in a very dusty area, and i often hit dirt and gravel trails

when I last cleaned the filter, the amount of dust coming off of it was unbelievable, yet the filter had allowed good flow into the carb.

and since I keep stuff along time, some of my vehicles are running K&N's I bought close to 30 years ago.
they've paid off.

my gmc has 160,000 desert miles, I cleaned the intake and sensor a few months ago and there was very little schmutz on the maf sensor- i attribute that to the filtering

Default air cleaner help

After applying oil to the filter element I usually hold the filter in one hand and swing it hard toward the ground in the grass or the street. I keep rotating the filter element and swinging it until the excess oil stops flying off of the filter (usually takes about 5-6 swings).

If you have black headers most definitely pull it and like someone else said blot it with a paper towl and clean the football cover. That **** will blow back on your pipes and stain them. It will wipe off your chrome it will just be messy until the excess oil is gone.
