Default How do you change the oil in a bike with an oil cooler?.,,

My friend stopped by with his new to him '10 ultra classic limited, and was talking about changing the oil. He asked how do you drain the oil in the cooler and lines, and how much extra does it hold. I gave him my best dear in the headlights look and said, I don't know. So who can shed some light on this mystery.,,

so a slight amount of oil remains in the lines.

as long as the oil isn't contaminated, you are changing 90%+.

which is good enough for me.

in the case of an exploded cam drive or raw gas or other substance getting in the oil, the lines can be removed and the oil cooler blown out ( in reverse flow) until clear.

It's the same as a bike without a oil cooler, I think the only way to get all the old oil out is to use a scavenger kit, but that would apply to a bike with or without a oil cooler. JMHO.

I don't believe the manual says anything about draining the oil cooler. The above mentioned is spot on.

Drain the old oil, Change the filter, Add the new oil.....Go for a ride.

Don't overthink it, it's an oil change.

As mentioned, just drain the oil in the bike. The cooler holds about a thimble full after the engine is shut off.

You are not servicing a titan missle. Change the oil and enjoy.

if he wants to get technical, then he could purchase the oil scavenger to chase the dirty oil out. not sure if this fits his model.

If it cost 5 bucks it would be a waste of money for the application.
