Default Tranny lube

I used Amsoil in all three hole of my pervious Harley. I picked up a 2013 Ultra and from what I have been reading I should use a gear lube and not 20w50 in the tranny. Any opinions ?

You have opened the proverbial "Can of Worms" on opinionated oil usage threads. you will get 400+ different opinions on this. So, for opinion number one, here's mine.

Yes, motor oil can be used in a tranny. However, I do not think it protects as well as an extreme pressure gear lube. That being said, I will not put motor oil in a gearbox.

But if your hell bent on using Amsoil in your bike, my recommendation would be the 20w-50 in the engine and primary, and an Amsoil gear lube in the tranny.

If your owners manual states to use gear oil, I would not use 20w-50 Motor oil, period. After the warranty is up then use what you want, but I still would retain the use of a gear oil.

I use Amsoil in the crank. Formula + in the primary and Redline in the tranny. I agree that a gear oil should be used in the gearbox. The logic is too clear to ignore. There are higher shearing forces in the gearbox with longer change intervals and no combustion taking place.

Redline is very sticky and is the color of Pepto Bismol which makes it easier to read on the dipstick.

Something to know is that gear oil is not measured on the same scale as motor oil.

I use Amzoil 20W50 in the engine and primary, Extreme Gear in the tranny. Shifts better and I don't worry about the heat in traffic, the oil can handle it. Really feel the difference in the shifting and actually being able to find neutral. Amzoil is the absolute best, my opinion...

Formula plus works fine or gear oil...Change it every 20000 miles and you'll be fine.
