In the past I got twice miles from front to rear tire
At about 13k I needed a rear tire and dealer said your front is 4/32 I thought like you did I am almost at 2/32 need to replace.
Now I understand that front tire starts with about 1/2 the tread depth of rear one so 3 or 4 /32 is much more critical on rear as most of tread is gone while front is only half way.
Please correct me as I am no expert on tires

Both of my sets of D407/D408 tires have worn pretty evenly: Got 20k out of the first set, rear was down to just barely over the wear bars at that time, front was a little better. Knew I was going to need new tires in the near future and had a discount, so replaced both.
Current set of D407/D408 has about 17k miles on them, and looking like I'll get another 7k out of them based on wear. Both still wearing evenly.
Considering the mileage that I'm getting out of these tires, I'll happily replace both at the same time when they wear out; every other bike I've had I've gone two rears to one front, but I was only getting about 9-10k on rears, and about 16-18k front. So OEM is lasting the same on the front, twice as long on the rears so I'm saving the cost of a rear tire every time I change them.

I'm getting at least two to one front vrs. rear. Replaced rear at 12,000 miles and the front looks like it will make one, possibly two more rears. The first rear was a Michilin Commander which was good in dry weather but squirely as hell ion wet roads. The front is an E3. They are both E3's now.
