I'm looking at getting a set of Wild 1 Apes for my Road King Custom. I cant measure for fit as I'm in the SandBox. I'll be returning in time for Sturgis. I read that they have a limit on height for apes there.( Shoulder High ) I'm 6' W/ 32 inseam. Have Sundowner Touring Seat and Corbin Hollywood Solo. How high could I possibly go? I also have the Harley Adjustable Windshield and modifying it is out of the question. I never really got used to the Beach Bars after 3500 miles so they got to go. Any info on this would be appreciated

 

i was there in 03 with 18s 2in rise and had no problems with the cops

 

I don't think you will have a problem with 18s. Actually I have never seen or talked to anyone who was pulled over there for apes or pipes. If you are just riding along with everyone else they seem to leave you alone. I have always been very impressed with law enforcement at Sturgis.

 

If they are over your shoulders they will ticket you $ 20.00 on the spot and you'd better have the cash, or your bike maybe inpounded. You better hope you don't have any beer on your breath or you will be inpounded along with your bike.

 

Will it just be a one-time ticket or will they keep writing them? I need to keep my nose clean cause I'll be returning here afterwards. Using R&R for the Rally. Anyone my size here that has Apes and can tell me how high i can go without going over my shoulders?

 

just keep them right on the edge of slipping and when in town yank them down, then back on the road push them back in place. Did this the past two years with my WG and no problems.

 

Having lived in the Sturgis area most of my adult life and having some law enforcement friends, I'll tell you what they've told me (I've got Wild 1 18's on my Road King and they are right at my shoulder--I'm 6-1). Of course all patrol guys are different, but to gethassled it's got to be a pretty blatant violation. One told me that if there's a question, he'll get behind the biker to see if he can see knuckles. Keep in mind that some of the more aggressive officers will use this opportunity as probable cause to stop to check for other violations (a.k.a. DUI etc.). This is especially important to keep in mind at the Rally. One other note, I absolutely recommend the Wild 1 18 inch apes.
