Will I need an oil cooler or fans added toa 2010 SG?
2010 SG
I live and ride in the southeast (Ga, Al, FLA) area. I'm getting ready for the upcoming riding season on my new bike and I noticed a thread about Wards fans and another about oil coolers. Should this be a concern for me on a 96Ci 6 speed bike? I have heard that HD's have an issue of over heating during the hot summer months but I would have thought they would have fixed that by now.
So is the Ward's fan's enough, or do i need more. I dont want to wait until its too late .
Thanks
Rick

I use an oil cooler and regularly ride at 105º*
i have bikes without oil coolers as well.
but cooled oil is a good idea, the added capacity also helps (marginally).
I use the HD kit which is fine but overpriced- the jagg kit was not available when i was shopping.
install is easy, the only special tool needed is a 7/16" allen wrench, or you can make a tool like the one pictured. put the head of the bolt into the sleeve and turn the outer nut with a wrench
I have not used fans, and some of the fan kits ( the HD parade fan) seem to block air flow when at speed. fans sold on craigslist that attach to the oil cooler may also block air flow at speed.
The late model bikes have EITMS, with will shut off spark and fuel to the rear cylinder, just pumping cool air through it to cool that cylinder and the entire motor as a side-effect.
EITMS only comes in when the bike is at idle and not moving, so on a hot day sitting at alight, you may notice this come in, as the idle will get weird and lumpy
It is nifty
Mike
My own testing shows a 25º lower oil temp ( in the tank) with fairing lowers mounted on a 105º ambient day, no oil cooler at that time. running about a 25 mile loop, mostly freeway at 65 MPH

Don't sit in stop and go traffic on a hot day and you'll be fine.

If you are gonna invest in a oil cooler co with a fan because if you are not moving , a oil cooler that doesn't get air to it isn't gonna do much good... I have 83000 on my 07 Electra Glide with many stop n go traffic situations... Bike is still running... No oil cooler or fans on mine...

Sometimes you don't have that choice. The fans will keep a bike from over heating when you are in a bad traffic situation. While monitoring my ET's with my Power Vision I have seen the engine temp's dip when coming off the highway into stop and go traffic. No oil cooler will do that and the HD motor doesn't do it naturally.
The op stated "So is the Ward's fan's enough, or do i need more. I dont want to wait until its too late" Just trying to point out that his bike won't blow up without a "Wards's Fan".

I ride a 2010 Street Glide. I run a catless head pipe (Cobra Power Port), a Stage 1 air intake and a PCV tuner. That cooled my bike down considerably, but she still went into parade mode frequently and I was running oil temps of between 230F to 250F. After I installed Wards Fans and a Harley oil cooler with a Wards Werks thermostat, my bike never went into parade mode again and my oil temps never exceed 220F and generally runs between 190F and 205F no matter the conditions. That's a good bang for the buck as far as I'm concerned!
