Swing arm mods for the '08 and earlier frames

I can induce a very scary wobble on my '06 SG at will ( and I very rarely 'will' it to happen). I always have to laugh when I read where someone says BS to the issue and the different fixes simply because they have never experienced it. And the wobble is not limited to pre-'09 frames, but they are improved and fewer of them exhibit this shake. Those that do, wobble to a lesser degree.
If one rides at a reasonable pace and loafs along at the speeds intended for these bikes, they will likely never find the hinge in the middle of the bike. But those that push the limits will find it almost immediately and the first place to look is a hard-on-the-throttle-to-redline, high speed right hand sweeper. That usually gets things started on any rubber mount frame (Touring/Dyna).
There are braces that bolt to the bottom of the frame as well as partial to complete swingarm pivot/bushing kits. Most of the braces need little time or mechanical aptitude to install. The pivot/bushing kits are a little more involved.
My bike is getting a pivot/bushing kit known as Glide Pro and a set of Ohlins shocks.

I liken the use of any stabilizer as a "failsafe". Its like steadying a feeble arm by offering a hand. Doesn't matter who offers the hand. First and foremost though, the condition of the OEM swingarm components need to be up to snuff.

The biggest reason the 09+ bikes have better manners than the 08-earlier bikes is because of the forward motor mount, the relocated upper stabilizer link, and better tires. The motor mount was doubled up, and the upper stabilizer link was moved to a more forward position, which increases it's effectiveness, and the tires are much improved. All together, it has significantly tamed the wobble, and the tendency to follow tar snakes. The frame itself has little (if any) to do with it.
You can do several things to tighten up the handling of the early bikes. First is to make sure maintainence is up to date. Replace or upgrade the swingarm bushings. Replace the forward motor mount with a urethane motor mount. Adding a progressive touring link is a help, or you could basically acheive the same thing by relocating the upper stabilizer link to the current position ahead of the front cylinder. (not a simple mod, you need to machine the front head to accept the stabilizer mount, and weld a mounting boss on the left downtube).
I've done many of these mods on my 07, along with upgraded the rear tire to a 180 Avon, changed Ohlins rear shocks (now Arnott Aldans), billet triple trees, etc. My bike handles better than any stock touring Harley, including the 2014 Rushmore models. It just takes a little time and effort. It doesn't have to be expensive, fixing some of the handling woes of the early bike is much less expensive than trading in on a new one.

No, it doesn't eliminate the rear rubber mountings, only the old style cleve blocks, used in early rubber mounts prior to 2002, when the factory introduced the steel self-aligning bearings (in the CCE retrofit photo).

Bagger Brace Saves your butt
The wobble is true. It's there, don't beleive anything else. It will visit you when you are doing 50-70 around a big sweeping curve while you are enjoying the view. Very poor frame design by HD. Even they admit it. All know it including HD that is why they tried to fix it in '09. Not a real fix, but better. Lots of threads on this forum on the subject. Wrenches smarter than me can explain the physics behind it.
I added the Bagger Brace to my 08 and she tracks like a dream now, no wobble. Best place to try it is to find a section of road or highway that has been scrapped or "groved" for new topping. you know...the ones where they put up the littl orange sign that has a picture of your buddy screaming for help while his bike goes all over the road? Yep thatts the one. Note how the wheels stay in line when you ride on it. Without the Bagger Brace my front wheel would be going 6 inches to the right of my back wheel...Now that is fun. It will pucker you so bad you will need a stick to pry the foam of the seat out of your backside. Shew!!! or you will just loose control alltogether and kiss the groved pavement...ouch. I think purchasing one of the third party fixes from a reputable firm is much more cost effective and safe than a visit to the ER, months of rehab, and a totaled bike. What do you think?
