OK, I think I'm convinced but here's my next question. When I dump the old petroleum oil while the bike is on the side stand, how will I know if all the old stuff has completly drained? Will it hurt the motor if a small amount of oil mixes with the new synthetic? What is the best proceedure to switch over?

syn 3, but switching to Mobil 1 V-twin next time around. No problems with the Syn 3 but, have always like the Mobil 1 product.

cages are a different story, stick with dyno and change every 5000 miles.

amsoil web site says just switch and forget about it. But some one will tell you about oil flushing systems and sell you some snake oil.

I'm switching to synthetic in all three holes on Saturday when I bring bike in for 1000 mile service. I've used Mobile one in all my vehicles and always had good results so why change now. Plus, I put a lot of money in this bike and I'm not rich. That's just me though.

I use Syn 3 in my 07 Ultra and will be changing the oil every 2,500 miles. My brother, who owns one of the largest automotive engine manufacturing plants in the U.S. says the most important things is frequent oil changes.....oil gets dirty over time.

My favorite part is riding between changes!

Same here! I have always used regular oil in all my stuff without any trouble whatsoever. 130,000 miles on the 1997 Sportster with nothing but 15w40 diesel oil...and not one bolt/nut was ever turned on the engine or transmission. Overkill is also overexpensive....I qualify for neither.

I am not saying synthetic is bad...but I believe it is overkill for most people.

When I got my EG I didn't know what the original owner was using in it, bought it on consignment from the dealer, so I went with dino because it had over 56k on it. I have added 20k more to it and have a couple of leaks. I will use dino until I do a rebuild. don't want to pour that expensive stuff onto the ground plus the cleaning action of syn can make it leak better. The cost difference between dino and syn is a wash when you remember that you can go twice as long or more between oil changes so your cost per qt per mile balances out if not actually being cheaper.
