Default First 1000 Mile service, Why take it in?

Everyone tells my son to take his 07 street glide in for the first service(1000 mile),besides switching all oils to synthetic, clutch adjustment, brake inspection, wheel alighment, nuts, bolts Ect. What's left, there's no valve adjustment,no dyno runs, do they hook it up to the computer?Warrenty issues? Alot of money can be saved if I do it for him at home, and document it in his owners manual, or does he really need to take it in?

Go ahead and spend the money on the 1000 mile service. The dealer will make adjustments based on what the rider tells them, perform recall work, torque bolts and nuts, change out the fluids, and get the bike into the the computer. This is also a goodtime to establish a relationship with the shop in case you have future issues. After the 1000 mile service, doem yourself and save some $$. Just be sure to keep receipts showing milage and service performed.

IMO, the 1k service is a rip off. First, there is very little on the service that is "hard." Most any guy handy with some basic tools and who can read a service manual can do the work. Second, there is no way to tell that the listed work is done thoroughly. I'd suspect that it is not in a great many cases. Save your money and do it yourself if you are capable.

I do all of my own work but just felt better taking it in for the first service.

I took mine for the 1K service. After I payed the dealer $395 ,it felt like they bent me over and you know what.
I found loose bolts and the + battery cover was not in place.I thought they would do a good job but I was wrong.I'm not saying every dealer is like this but beware.
I do all the services now.

I'm taking mine for the 1000 mi. service saturday. I debated over doing it myself, cause like alot of you,I'm not crazy about someone else messin with my bike. But I'm gonna let them do this one. I'm new to Harley and I hope they know more than I do. I will be getting a service manual and doing my own service in the future.

If you know how its no different than any other service. Its laid out in the manual, if you want to do it then do no big deal. If you want that dealer interaction then the 1K is a good place to start.

If you have the skills and tools, do it yourself. It's all in the maual. and if you want to see it done first, get a Fix your Hog DVD, one of our web's sponsors. Tell them Berettag sent you.

I believe they put the lesser experience guys on oil changes and 1000 mi checkups.
