I will take mine in for the 1k service as well. After that, I will do my own work. I have seen too many issues on other vehicles in the past. I trust my own work more.

I took mine in for the 1000 mile service cost $260 with adding full syn and I could really tell a difference in the bike after, tighter and the service manager went over every item with me even made a statement it's more than a 300 dollar oil change, ok I'm convinced, it was worth it to me.

I took my Ultra '07 in last week for the 1000. $252.............Ijust prayed that when I got home I wouldn't discover any leaks. It's wise to check crankcase oil level afterthey do it...just in case. I'll do my own from here on out

Just buy the service manual, follow directions, and do it yourselves. Use the money you save to buy more beer.

If you're going to take it in for the 1k service, why do you have to take it to a dealer? Why not go to an indy; the service will be as good (if not better), and it will be 1/2 the price of the HD shop. That's what I did, got my 1k done at a place in Mesa, AZ (recommended by a few people that had work done there), and the job was well done, and was about $160, including synthetic.

Where can you pick up a service manual at? I don't wanna pay that "up the butt" money for a mediocre service that, quite frankly, shouldn't cost that much...

I know of to many guys that did not get what they paid for from the dealer. I have friends that have checked the work that was suppose to be done after the fact to only find it was partly done, I myself have allways done my own.Quick example, on the touring models you are suppose to grease the headset bearings with the grease fitting on the head tube of the frame. My frienddouble checked it and it took a half a tube of grease to fill the head tube... This means they did not even grease it like the 1000 mile sevice calls for, what else did they skip over?? Also a lot of time the teck scratchs your bike, you have no way of knowing if you will get a top teck or one that is careless.

Get the service manual and do it your self, you will be money ahead. Keep reciepts and records in a file and your good to go.

I do my own service work and prefer it that way....

Take Care,
Bill G

New Ultra owner 3 weeks ago and 950 miles later. I was checking out the owners manuel to do my own 1000 mile service and came across this on page 139 under Break In Maintenance.
Note- "The performance of new motorcycle initial service is required to keep your new motorcycle warranty in force and to assure proper emissions system operation"
How will MOCO translate if you do service yourself or at an Indy?
