Default Question regarding 2001 RG cranking issue/Clutch

Noticed if I try cranking my RG while it is in 1st gear, Clutch engaged, that it tries to slightly lung forward while it is turning over. Is this normal or does the clutch need adjusting?

normal

even though the lever and mechanism has the clutch plates ("steels") and disks pulled apart, there is stiction from the fluid between them...so when the starter turns the clutch basket and steels, the clutch disks will turn a little, and that is transfered through the tranny to the belt and rear wheel.

some imports require the bike be in neutral with side stand up and auto helmet detector engaged for the starter to work.

your bike requires you to know what you are doing

and you do

If you're trying that at the first start of the day, engine cold, then you are being unkind to your bike! It is possible that adjusting your clutch may improve things a little, but start in neutral whenever practical.

I start my bike from Neutral about 99% of the time. It is always cold cranked from Neutral also. When cranked from first gear it is usually from quick stops that I have made while traveling. I really noticed it yesterday while traveling and was wondering if the clutch needed adjusting but I wanted to check with some knowledgable people first.

Thanks for your replies

It's normal especially if sitting cold. The disks oil stick together and even after 40K on mine, they are still tight on the spline. However since you ask, it's very easy to check and you should if you do not know when it was done. You adjust clutch behind derby cover and the lever freeplay on the cable. Couple open end wrenches, allen and a larger box wrench at the clutch. Also probably a torx27 for the cover. Once set, the adjustment will probably not change for years if done correctly. My 40k has worn the disk less than .0005...actually almost unmeasurable.
