At 27000 miles your lifters may look like this.

That's strange, I always run syn in the engine and my stock lifters looked like new when I pulled them at 25,000. I still have them because there the last of the good stock Harley ones before they started with the "C" model that are made in Mexico. Those should be the "B" model since yours is a 2010? Although they looked fine my stock lifters were a little loud, when I installed the woods lifters and adjusted them with the fuel moto adjustable push rods it did quiet down my bike a little.

Good thread...this is why I always recommend to others to replace the lifters regardless...have had disastrous things happen with low mileage OEM lifters, there are better parts out there, and that's simply my own opinion, not necessarily an overwhelming statement of fact!!! I wouldn't replace cams without replacing lifters, it's just as simple as that...on my last bike, a Pancone engine, we pulled the cams out at about 25,000 miles, and the hard facing was going from the lifters...they were OEM parts.

When I changed out my cams at 5k I cheaped out and reinstalled my stock lifters as they looked fine. At about 12k I started to get an increase in lifter noise on the rear cylinder. After adjusting pushrods a couple of times without fixing the noise it was apparent that one lifter was going bad (not pumping up fully). When I pulled them to replace with Gatermans I found the same issues as described, the rollers were missing most of the hard coating. The rear exhaust was the worst, and also the one that was not pumping up fully. I am hoping there is no damage to the cams. Changed out the lifters in the fall and snow has been on the ground since the day after changing them out so I have not had any chance to ride it since. That said, it was much quieter when I started it up. I also did not pay attention to the recommended preload and went with .140. I have run synthetic since mile 1.

I just got off the phone with gator and and they told me that .100 is the best setting. If you have hardness that came off your lobes are probably bad and will rapidly wear and contaminate your oil with excess metal. Just pulled my 6000 mile old major rebuild down and as I said the lobes were pitted and have to replace them and all the bearings
