I have had the BAL-3ST twice. More than bright enough even on the middle intensity setting. I set mine to 3 quick strobes then solid when braking. Gets attention for sure even in the daylight.

Default BAL-2R Installed

I decided on the BAL-2R, I knew if I got the BAL-1 I would always wish I had gotten the brighter model. I installed it today and decided on the medium running light with a 3 flash-3 flash-steady pattern for the brake. I drove down the street and had my daughter hit the brake so I could see it from a distance. All I can is OMG they are bright!

That's why it's called a B A L
The 1 is good for most.
That was one of the first/better mods for me.
I've been rear ended before.
It's no fun.

Here's one more difference between the BAL-1 and BAL-2: The BAL-2 can be seen much better from off-axis.

From about 4-5 feet away, taken from about 4 feet off the ground: BAL-2 on the left, BAL-1 on the right (sorry about the big pic)

Get further away, and straight on, they both seem to be just as bright; close up, I'll take the BAL-2.

After talking with customer service at BAL, the increased side visibility was a big part of my decision to get the BAL-2R.

I'm not so sure the side visibility is a valid argument for getting the BAL 2 over the 1. I'm sure people 3 counties over can see the damn thing! The 1 is almost bright enough to see it from the front!

Love mine & have had no issues with it over the last 2 years. Money WELL spent, IMHO!

Anyone knows how the BAL compare to the HD LED backlights?

No comparison. The BAL is the brightest and best quality taillight you can buy. But there will be some that will say that a Kuryakyn is just as good as the BAL. Those are usually the ones that think the BAL is too expensive though.
