K&N Air filter
Has anyone ever cleaned their air cleaner without buying the kit? If so, what did you use to clean it out? Any info would be appreciated.

I was just wondering if anyone has done it and what they did. Planned on buying the kit but wanted a quick backup for if I got into a bind.

I wouldnt risk what damage you might do to the filter with using the wrong type of cleaner for the element...

It's only $15 for the k&n cleaning kit. Comes with the oil. I recommend just using the proper stuff to clean it.

You could probably clean it with alcohol or solvent, but I would bet that would destroy the element itself. Supposedly the oil K&N uses is a special oil, but who knows.

Low-phosphate dish washing detergent will clean the dirt off the filter and not damage it (because the filter breathes the same air we breathe). Then for the light mineral or silicon oil it's more comfortable to use a colored fluid because the filter media needs very little.

You can use Dawn dish soap to wash it but your gonna need the oil which you can buy separate.
