Any good de-greaser will clean it. I've used formula 409 or Fantastic in a pinch. Not sure about the oil though I usually run out of the cleaner first.I'll bet you could use WD40.

A kit goes a long way.

Buy one, put it on the shelf. In a pinch, it's there on the shelf...

Ran out of cleaner in the kit once, used a degreaser called Awesome Orange (dollar tree) and it worked great, so now use that and purchase just the large spray can of K&N oil.

One could use cleaning solvent to clean it, I reckon, but I'm unsure what kind of "bind" one would be in if they bought the correct kit in the first place...if you're concerned about that, buy two kits and be certain.

Buy a extra kit now then you won't be in a bind later.

Don't spray too much oil, make sure you have enough light and stay about one foot away because the filter media must not be soaked.

A Guy at the parts counter told me He uses 409 to clean His, rinse well.
He said it's very important to dry it well before putting the oil back on it.
Don't rush the drying process.
Many use too much oil, only K/N for that.

This is what I do and find that this method cleans my filter like a champ. I soak the filter with greaser supplied in the kit (I use AFE products) and let it soak. If the degreaser bottle is the finger pump type I recommend getting a pump bottle with a hand pump. I run a hot bucket of water with oxyclean, and then put the filter in right side up and let it soak for 20-30 min. The oxyclean completely cleans the filter to the point the excess oil residue floats to the top. I disperse the oil and pull the filter out, rinse and let dry completely. Then I spray the recharge oil on (Aerosol can only). I only use aerosol spray oil because I find it easier to spray evenly and avoid over-saturation. Bam. Long story short, you could probably hust use oxyclean to clean the filter, but would still need the recharge oil.

Oh and I have been using this method for years and my bikes and Diesel truck have not blown up...
