Per the dealer recommendation, at 1,000 did the first oil change and did NOT use syn.
At 5,000 i'll change it again and then go with the syn

Dealer switched my 2011 to Syn3 and Belray(trans) at the 1000 mi service. I have since switched to Mobil1 20w-50 in crankcase, Mobil1 gear lube in trans and HD Formula+ in primary. I like how the Formula+ makes the clutch grab a bit more solid in the primary than the synthetic seemed to. If I catch Mobil1 15w-50 on a good sale I'll sometimes use it in the crankcase particularly in winter. I think the 15w-50 has more friction additives than the 20w-50 so would probably keep it out of the primary.

I agree with what someone said about new Harleys coming with synthetic oil in them. I might be wrong.

Syn good anytime.
Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 all three holes makes life simple.
Catch it on sale, and stock up.
It exceeds the needs.
This comes up all the time, check the search and find a comfortable chair.

Only the CVOs and they have'd many discussions on their forum of adding oil between changes. Same with the Corvette forum, lots of discussions of adding oil between changes.

The thing about dino oil that all folks agree on is that it is a better engine break-in oil because of its molecular structure and no worse than synthetic for engine wear. Two identical engines run side by side with the two oils will look the same after being tore down.

The main advantage of syn oil (and why it's not good for break-in) is that it has less friction on engine parts. Less friction means less heat and better mileage. But it doesn't mean less wear. So unless it is 100 degrees outside, there is not much logic for using synthetic over dino oil during the break-in period of an engine.

Finally, a REAL winter thread from a sacrificial newbie who didn't know any better.

Now, since it's going to be in the 50's today and the 70's through Sunday, I can go ride in shirt sleeves.

Oh, and I've always run HDMobile1AmisolCasteroilPompieOlive dinosynth 1w77. Motor runs cooler, it last longer, there is less dust on my bikes, they shine better and longer, my wife doesn't nag as much and polishes my boots more often, fish fry up crisper, and my morning crap looks and smells like fresh Maine blueberries.

What more could you ask for?

Use at first oil change. I use Mobil V-Twin 20/50 in primary & oil casings and I Use Redline Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil in tranny.
