1) Pulled rocker covers, clips on pushrod tubes and spark plugs
2) Put a piece of paper towel in the front cylinder spark plug hole and rotated rear wheel until it popped out. Used a pencil in the hole to verify it was at the top.
3) Rotated the wheel back and forth to verify and rockers didn't move.
The rockers are torqued down correctly?

2012 Street Glide. Got about 4-5k on it. Had it for one riding season and decided to powder coat all of the chrome.

Geez. If the pushrods are correct and everything is buttoned up to specs, I can't think of anything else. Its got oil pressure. Should be good to go.

The exhaust push rods are black and should be on the lifters furthest away from cyl and intake push rods are plain color and should be on the liters closest to the cyl.
beyond that I an not sure where to go next.

Well, that verifies that I have the pushrods in the right place. Here's the rear cylinder.

Well. Everything is rechecked. Every electrical connection is right. Got oil. Checked. Double checked. Engine spins freely with plugs out by hand (rotating rear wheel). Watching rockers and springs while rotating and no binding. It's not 20 degrees and you have 50 or 60 weight oil.

I'd put it back together and fire it up again. Listen and obviously shut it down after a minute or so if it's still clattering.

My brother and I rebuilt a Toyota supra engine back some 25 years ago. It clattered bad for it seemed like 2 minutes. We shut it down. Restarted. And it was fine. Scared the crap out of us..

Yep, that's where I'm at now. Putting the rocker covers back on (still a major PITA by the way) and going from there. I really don't know what else to do.

It sounds to me like you trust yourself enough that you got it right. If I'm not correct, have someone who does look at it first.

...and just like that...it's fine.

Sometimes I really don't understand these machines.
