Default Can the cat be gutted/drilled out while on the Bike?

Just received my Jackpot S/O mufflers, and about to put them on, but wanting to gut the cat. I've read lots about ways to do it such as using a long paddle bit, but haven't seen anything about doing while on the bike. Can it be done or do I need to take the pipes off?

1.) maybe but if pushing hard, that stress is transferred to the exhaust ports and gaskets, so you may get a leak.

2.) exhaust pulses move back and forth within the exhaust system...junk left in the headers may possibly be sucked back up into the combustion chamber.

I drilled mine out off the bike. Technically it probably can be, but it would be difficult in my opinion. To add to the previous poster...the stuff breaks off in chunks as you drill it out and would be tough to make sure you get it out without being able to turn the pipes upside down and twist around and stuff.

Why don't you just install the mufflers and ride the bike for a while? It's winter time, so you can always remove cat material later…or better yet ditch the harley header and get something better this summer.

Good advice! I cut a panel in mine to get the honeycomb stuff out on a Saturday afternoon. Then I had to find someone to weld the darn thing back together. After everything was said and done I ended up buying a set of S&S headers to replace it because of a leak in the welds, ARGH!

If I were you I would take the head pipe off, cut it open and remove all the cat material. If you are going to do it you might as well do it right.

Some say yes, some say you should not. It's up to you.
Personally, I went with V/H Power Duals, no regrets...

i would take it off. you could hit the 02 sensors with drill bit, plus you don't want that dirt in the engine. drilling it is pretty easy with the pipe in a vise and shop vac hooked up to header end.
