Do heat shields really shield much of the heat? I always thought they were just there to hide the ugly discolored pipes underneath.

 

don`t know how much heat they keep (in-out) but I had drag pipes on my shovelhead and no shields. if you touched hot pipe, instant burn. with shields, will be hot, but not instantly blister YMMV
