Default Garage Door Opener

I originally posted my response to this thread https://www.hdforums.com/m_1308741/tm.htmbut feel that since this issuch a cool mod for a garage door opener I thought it would get more visibility on it's own:

It went well! I have a Genie garage door opener and it happens to run on 12 VDC. I soldered 2 wires off thebutton inside a spare remote that I had. The Auto Switch connects to 12VDC along with the remote. Both are grounded and the Auto Switch gets it's trigger from the high beam wire that goes to theheadlight itself.

ALED is also included so you can tell if your garage door remote has been activated.I mounted the LED above and center of my speedometer and tach. It turns on red when the bike is powered up, it flashes green/red when you toggle the high beam switch and it goes solid green when the remote had been activated.

This is very easy and straight forward on an Ultra once you remove the outside fairing half. Every connection is done there and both the remote and Auto Switch are hidden there as well.

The remote/Auto Switch are together on top of the stereo next to the CB.

Here are a few photos:

I hear about a lot of people hooking the opener to the headlight switch... question for you.. when you are riding with the high beams on, aren't you activating the circuit, and running the opener as well?

No. You need to hit the high beam switch twice for it to activate and when it activates it only holds the garage remote on for 1 second which is long enough for the newer style "rolling code" remotes. To re-activate the remote you need to hit the high beam switch twice again.

The cool thing is the LED lets you see all of this happening so you are not left guessing if the thing is working or not.

As a side note, you don't have to hook it up to the high beam switch. You can hook it up to your foot brake pedal orany another switch that will give the Auto Switch 2 quick hits of 12 VDC to activate.

I did the same mod, but I mounted my Genie garage door switch under my seat. I used the acc switch that's all ready there and the wires are pre run under the seat. I don't need a LED light to show me that is working. I can see if the garage door is open or shut.

I knew someone would come back with a smart remark about the door being open or closed!

I like LED's so I was happy that it came with one!

I ordered mine from a local BMW motorcycle dealer. I know that Auto Switch http://www.autoswitch.com/has an Ebay store as well. It was $30.
