103 or 110

Bagman1 I have a 13 ultra classic did the stage 1 when I bought it. at a little over 5000 miles I did the stage 2 with a few tweaks almost equilavent to the 107 and couldn't be happier the tourq is outstanding. Contemplating doing the stage 3 or 4 after the wrnty is out but don't feel its really needed nor do I want the increased pinging noise hope this helped

Right now I am at a crossroad on which engine to go with. I have an 07 96 that was punched out to a 103 almost 7 years and 50k miles ago ago. The crank went south so I just spent over 8k to do a crank up 103 build.
That builder sucked so I have to either go in again or buy a crate motor if
Heres what I have learned from a HD master tech.
The 110 is junk period, stay away from it (I suppose if it was a garage queen and I ***** rode it it may be ok, but I dont ride like that).
The 120 is for deep pocket folks that dont mind dumping a lot of $$ when things break, and he strongly recommended a chain drive because he constantly is replacing drive belts on 120's.
The 103 is the best all around modded motor, he says you can get 120/120 from one if built and tuned correctly.
I think I am leaning on going the 103 route.FWIW

I will probably stay with the 103 platform, another note I keep hearing is about all the heat issues on anything larger than 103, in fact every builder I spoke to say they dont like going over 103 because of the diminished longevity. I run interstate backroads and need to lean more towards the reliability and fuel mileage especially with only a 5 gal tank.
Pops, I hear you but I cant help myself always getting myself in trouble. My wife says why cant you get a stock motor and leave it alone... I just looked at her and said I have no idea how to explain it to you other than Im a born gearhead and I have to take something apart and make it better.

I have rode with both. I owned a 2012 CVO Street Glide for about a year and a half with the 110. Currently riding a 2014 Street Glide with the 103. For me I will take the 103 over the 110 anyday. While the 110 makes good power and was fun to ride it is not significant enough to me to warrant the extra cost. Plus the fact that the 110 runs hotter (even with de-catted header) and has tighter tolerances so it makes more top end noise. Mine was very noisy and always annoyed me. But I have heard this varies from bike to bike. Luck of the draw I guess. My 103 has a stage 1 on it. It runs strong, is solid, quiet and runs cooler. Just my thoughts. But of course the other factor to consider when puchasing a CVO is the beauty of the bike with that awesome paint job. That's hard to match with a base bike but again to each is own. My current SG is plain old Vivid Black with silver pinstriping and honestly, I think with the chrome and black contrast, it is actually more compelling to look at than my CVO was. Good luck either way!
Bearcat, I couldn't agree with you more. I started last spring with a 2013 CVO Ultra. It had plenty of power but the handling and comfort ride sucked. In fact I was in the process of demoing an alternate seat when I had my accident. The stock seat would be alright if you weighed 300 lbs and had a 3' ft wide ***; otherwise it held your legs open like you were about to give birth..... In any event after the accident I went with a 13 CVO RK and while I liked the handling and ride, I was still annoyed with the heat (catless headpipe and 4" Rineharts helped somewhat), the stereo sucked *** while the bike was in motion and the friggen noise from the motor was unreal. So after all that I ended up with a 2014 FLHTK and (touch wood) it has easily met and surpassed all my expectations. Great handling (wider forks); comfortable (just changing out the bars to reduced reach) and plenty of power! Not an appreciable difference between the high output 103 and the stock 110. Certainly not $10k worth anyway. That's MHO!
