Default RKC Drive Belt adjustment way out?

Hi All,

Started my 1000 mile service today and checked the drive belt (on the jiffy stand, 10 psi in the rear shocks and using the H-D tool at 10 pounds of force) to find I have 7/8" free play from rest to max deflection. Supposed to be 3/8 - 7/16". Has anyone else had a belt so far out?Other than that, all the bolts were tight, not a trace of any kind of fluid leak, tire pressure good, hadn't used a drop of oil, and other than the engine running a little better than day one, everything else was premo! I'm happy.

I always recommend that people have a belt tension gauge and check the belt every 4 or 5,000 miles. A too tight belt is hard on bearings, and a too loose one could slip a tooth and tear thing up.

Regards,

Bill

should be checked with rear wheel on ground and one rider on bike..the weight will cause a small bit of a change.

Follow the service manual to the T and all will be well. The adjustments are different according to whether it's on the stand or the rear wheel is up in the air. Seven-eighths is too loose but you can expect that much stretch out of a new belt.

Rotate the wheel - tension changes a bit depending on wheel angle - go for the tight area and use that for your final tension setting. Different mechanics have different philosophies when it comes to drive belt tension. I personally go by the book and hope I'm not too hard on the bearing.

I did it by the book and had terrible noises coming from the rear end. I backed it off to about 1/2-5/8 and it seems to run better. Mine was at about 1" so who really knows.

I don't know what 'terrible noises' means, but sounds like you may have another issue. Have you checked the sprocket bolts? Bearings?
