Any Tips For Keeping Gas Spill To A Minimum When Removing Tank?
I've done a search...can't seem to find much other than the obvious when you remove a tank. I have an 01 carbureted that I need to take the tank off again to have it re-painted. I've done it once, should have put quick disconnects on it but didn't. Anyone have any tips or tricks on keeping the fuel spill to a minimum when removing the crossover?
I use a 5 gallon fuel can (or any can) with a long narrow funnel like you use to fill an auto transmission. Put the funnel right under the left crossover connection then disconnect it slowly. Guide the hose toward funnel and hold it there while everything drains.
I just pinch the hose off about half way down the hose with a small pair of needle nose vise grips on the right side of the tank (side fuel goes in). Once pinched off I can then take off the clamp. As soon as I pull the hose, I put a small rubber cap over the nipple to prevent the small amount of fuel left in the tank from coming out. I then put a bolt in the free end of the hose to plug it off and put the removed clamp on the hose/bolt. The pliers can come off now and the tank can be pulled.
Be real careful with the fuel tank quick disconnect. Use a small amount of grease to lube the O rings when you reassemble. Tear an O ring (I did) and you'll play hell replacing it.
I have 2 very small pair of needle nose vice grips and I clamped off each side then cut it in the middle placed the tank on 2 saw horses with a bucket under the hose ends then released the clamps and let it drain.
