The computer does it based on RPM and MPH when the combination is right the light comes on. Pull in the clutch and it goes out. Another thing that cause it to not work is the Dakota Digital speedometer re-calibrator.

As a side note, if it's too cold to ride, you may want to limit your "playing" with it in the garage. Running your engine in cold weather without getting it good and hot to burn off any condensation could be a bad thing. Most people ride 20 minutes or longer to get their bikes good and hot during cold weather.
Just an FYI.

If you buy some good riding gear you can ride in any temperature...just not snow or freezing precip of course. The "typical" HD rider limits himself in these areas due to style or buddy perceptions. Don't fall into that trap and miss-out on those clear frosty days.
HD is limited in their cold weather riding gear. Consider brands such as Olympia, possibly Aerostitch (over priced in my opinion), Tour Master, Cortech, etc. Heated gear (pants, vests, gloves) is a good option as well. The bike's charging system can handle it as long as you keep the rpms high enough to overcome the current load of the gear and still charge the battery. Usually not a problem.
