If you buy some good riding gear you can ride in any temperature...just not snow or freezing precip of course. The "typical" HD rider limits himself in these areas due to style or buddy perceptions. Don't fall into that trap and miss-out on those clear frosty days.
HD is limited in their cold weather riding gear. Consider brands such as Olympia, possibly Aerostitch (over priced in my opinion), Tour Master, Cortech, etc. Heated gear (pants, vests, gloves) is a good option as well. The bike's charging system can handle it as long as you keep the rpms high enough to overcome the current load of the gear and still charge the battery. Usually not a problem.

on my 08, it does not matter what the MPH or RPM is, if the clutch is engaged, in 6th gear, the light is on. if I pull in the clutch lever, the light goes out.

It is the ratio between the RPM and MPH that turns on the light. And the correct ratio only exists when the transmission is in 6th gear.
