Default Floating Brake Rotor

I just installed a used Thunderstar rear wheel that has a floating rotor. The one I took off was not. What is the difference? Is one better than another?

Thanks

...a "floating" rotor can actually move a little when it's squeezed between the brake pads...the idea is that it kind of "centers" itself each time it's squeezed between the pads, thus insuring that it gets equal pressure applied from each side of the brake caliper...so in a nutshell...yes..it's a little better than non floating...but not something you have to have...just a little upgrade is all...

Good explanation. (I think that they last a little longer too.)

Thanks for the explanation. I got an upgrade and didn't know it!

One of the reasons for floating rotors is to isolate the heat build-up in the rotor from the hub and bearings. I have had floating rotors front and rear on my Glide for over a decade now and they seem to provide improved braking.
