You should disconnect the battery or pull a fuse or something first and then look into the socket and locate the two tabs that grasp whatever you insert into there (a lighter) and using a small flathead screw driver bend them towards the center of the socket. That pretty much does it.
Just take a look and you'll see what I mean. Simple.

A few years ago my wife and I were out for a day trip, we stopped to eat lunch in the old section of Newport, KY. Very rough streets as a lot of old historic streets are. After lunch we had just pulled away from a stop sign and I was trying to shift from second gear. I could not shift up or down. I managed to get to a local dealer thinking my transmission must be out, after about ten minutes the tech came out and said I didn’t know you smoked Mike. It seems the lighter had come out and bounced under the shifter rod and was stuck, as I tried to shift it just bent it up and stuck it in tighter.
I changed it out to a small flash light.
