"Like" also now if you forget what you ride you can just look at the back! Next time someone asks what model it is you can just say "glad you asked, step right back here"...

More accurately, it's the registration giving you the rights to the numbers. The plate itself isn't worth anything except to the person who has the registration matching it.
I've got several 4 digit tags and out of states have no clue what it's about.

That's weird. Did you do it online? I've got NJ personalized plates on everything (it's a sickness, I know ). I usually get the "approved" status via email in a day. Then the 8-10 week wait. This one took the longest at 2 days short of 10 weeks from the day of order. The others have come in 4-6 weeks.

In NY you check availability on the DMV website order right there $35 plates in 3 weeks

I mailed it in Didn't feel like them waiting to mail me a passcode first. I got the passcode in 3 days but already sent in the form via snail mail. Oh well, hopefully they show up sometime soon. At least my plate is confirmed.

Yes, same in NJ (except that it's $50). You can check availability right when ordering online but then a human looks at it and you get an official email a day later saying its approved and going to production. Way back when, you used to have to order via mail. That was an arduous process, sending multiple mail requests only to find they were taken.
