They are tapered rolling bearings that require service using special purpose grease, with separate dust shields.

i wonder if any grease would get to the bearings if you drilled and tapped the neck on the frame?

That has always seemed to me as an easy way of loosing a whole can of grease, 99.9% of which will serve no useful purpose and add a couple of pounds to the dead-weight of the bike!

yea,but after getting it full on my 2 bikes i can then give it a few pumps and force new grease threw the bearings. it's gotta help.

it was mentioned on another site the head tube is not blocked off inside, so you would be trying to fill the whole frame with grease. Mike
