Default 2014 Ultra Limited gauge lights too bright

Hi all,

I rode my 2014 Ultra Limited at night for the first time today. I was struck by how bright the back-lighting on the four main gauges was. There's a light sensor that, I guess, is supposed to dim the lights when it's dark out. But, if it's dimming them, it's not doing it enough.

Anyone else have this problem please?

Many thanks.

On the radio under settings there is a brightness control and it has an auto function that has to be checked. I know this works to control the radio brightness and it may also control the gauges. Have you checked to insure this is enabled?

Yes, thanks, I did check that. It controls the radio/GPS brightness just fine, but doesn't seem to affect the instrument gauges.

Here's some more info: there's a light sensor in the tachometer. The owner's manual points it out. In a darkened garage, if I point a narrow-beam flashlight at the sensor, after about 10 seconds, it causes the radio/GPS display (which is set to auto brightness) to brighten. If I turn the flashlight off, the radio/GPS display slowly dims. This makes sense: there should be some delay in the brightening/dimming, otherwise the display would be changing brightness constantly because of streetlights and the like.

But it's strange that the instrument lights don't dim or brighten at all. They're always the same brightness.

I thought the same thing too...
Then thought I was just being a pansy.

The Street Glide Special has orange backlit gauges, and they are not nearly as bright, and easier on the nightime eyes.

I may be one of the few but I never liked the older orange back lite gauges, I really like the nice bright gauges at night on the 14

I hate the white face and orange lit gauges on my SGS. Maybe I can swap them out for the Ultras? I'd think with the can bus system the mileage would load right up no problem

Default change the leds

halfway done...to show the difference

just change the leds out for your personal color choice. I used blue for the face and odometer, and red leds for the needles.
Much better on my 2014 Ultra Limited. Not that hard... just a bit of soldering. Yes, I did them myself and did not mail them out to anybody.

Our FLHX SG gauges are completely different. They have a white dial face plate with an orange bulb. Can't adjust them. Not hard on the eyes at night...
