Default Is 1 quart oil sufficient vs. 38 oz. in the 6 spd. tranny

EDIT: Title should be... Is 1 quart oil sufficient vs. 38 oz. in the 6 spd. Primary case

Service manual states 38 ounce capacity in the 6 speed primary case on a 103, will 1 quart/32 oz's be ok?

Since there are 32oz in a quart and it calls for 38oz, your gonna be low 6oz, or almost 16% of total capacity. I'd not want to be that low in the primary.

Yes, buy 2 bottles the first time...the 2nd bottle will augment further changes through the years

the capacity needs to be checked as per the manual- the procedure has changed a bit year to year.

the fluid in the primary is fairly crucial to clutch engagement, feel and longevity.

not all fluids are compatible- and the clutch disks are soaked with the old fluid, so I do not suggest changing brands unless doing a complete change with new clutch disks.

a typical fluid drain will retain about 5 or 6 OZ in the clutch

Well, lets see. 32 vs. 36
32 vs. 38
32 vs. 38
Nope, there is no way that 32 oz comes up to 38 oz.
You didn't really need help with this did you? Your just pulling our chain...right??

OK, since the 96 & 103's are the same engines/transmissions except for a bigger bore, why would my 96 call for one quart and a 103 calls for 38 ounces.....I've been dumping one quart in mine and calling it a day since 2009.

DUH, I thought we were talking transmissions, fingers moved before brain........Yes, a little over a quart in the primary......

you may get better results checking as per manual and putting in the correct amount of fluid.

as with most lubricants, too much can cause foaming, which does not lubricate as well, and and may cause parasitic drag.
too little is...too little

ok then, a refill with one quart should work if 5 or 6 oz's are retained?, will taping the clutch lever pulled in with the drain plug out overnight drain all of it?

thanks

No. A dry primary takes 45 oz.

yep, manual states:

38 oz -wet
45 oz -dry

so, once drained it's considered dry?
