Hmm, I thought as long as there is oil under it that means there is still oil in it... shovels... the good ol' days never worried about synthetic or what brand as long as there was some there.
The extra 6 oz are to do a better job lubricating the compensator. Use 38 oz. Put in 32 oz and I bet your compensator will make more noise, at least most do and you will be able to tell which bikes are using only 32 oz.
I will second that, Had a local indy and he used to work a dealership tell me one quart was fine and my compensator would make a weird noise and was even worse going in curves, I put the 38oz's in and no more noise and neutral was easy to find... This was on my 08 street glide...
I fill until it is where it is supposed to be. I've never measured how much actually went in - I usually start by pouring the contents of an already opened bottle, then pour from a fresh bottle until there is enough. Yes, I use a flashlight but only one with synthetic light.
On my old road king, i found if i put more in the primary than required, it would leak around the countershaft/clutch seal at highway speeds. the primary is not the same as your motor where it is dealing with super heat dissipation(unless you are slipping the clutch). There is also a huge amount of non oil filled air space inside that big primary cover where is is getting spit around. No oil pump or oil pressure inside of that cavity, simply chain, compensator and clutch lubrication...getting all of that oil out during changes is also impossible with out removing the side cover and wiping the oil out. hence the volume difference during a routine change vs a teardown...
