No, it's not considered dry because there will be an amount retained by the clutch plates.

When it's disassembled, and discs washed in brake cleaner, then reassembled its considered dry. Dry is just that, all mechanical parts cleaned and dry.

This is just me, but if I have to buy another quart and put in 6 more oz like the manual states I will. I gave over $23000 for mine, just soon be on the safe side. Pretty expensive toy to skimp on the oil. Just my opinion.

To the OP, you really are making this a LOT harder than it really is.

I put 38 ounces of oil and forget about it, easy to get neutral and quiet :}

That 6 oz. spread out over the length of the primary is not perceptible to the eye.

Put the qt. in look at the level threw the opening and it contacts the area of the clutch basket to satisfy what the owners manual states for visual inspection.

I have always done one quart with my 10 HD's for many years and many miles. Zero issues. Guess what? Most techs at the dealer only put one quart in.

To the new math folks. 6 0z is only 12.5 % of 48 0z. not 16% - Jeez

And what about what is still in the primary case?

Yes I was assured when I bought my quart of Torco RGO 85W140 today which was recommended by him (Harley Service Manager) that 32oz is fine. I have a 2012 Ultra. He said when service work is done that's all they install (1 quart).
He also recommended Mobil1 20W50 for the engine and the Harley Primary Oil for the primary.

I would take "dry" to mean new disks ( which themselves should be soaked in fluid for a few hours or overnight before install.) and the primary cases opened, clutch basket cleaned...all that

I do zip tie the clutch lever overnight on a routine fluid change, on the jiffy stand...hoping to get out as much as I can

And that in a nutshell is why I don't take mine to a dealer. The owners manual and the service manual clearly state 38 oz of oil. No more no less, unless it's dry as described previously. Why in the world would you short yourself 6 ounces of oil just so you don't have to spend 8 or 12 bucks on another quart ? It's a 20K plus bike.

Do what you like with your 10 I will stick to the manual specs for my 4.
