What Exactly Does the Battery Charging Harness on the 2014's do?

Don't feel bad, my dealer didn't know about it so continuing with their friendly service added another one. I now have a pigtail on both sides. a few weeks later i remembered to mention it to them and they still had not even heard of it. All of the new bikes went out with 2 pigtails to that point. The one that comes with the bike is much heavier duty by the way.

Yeah sounds like an inconvenience to have to take the saddlebag off!

The $15 charging harness is there for a reason...HD is tired of battery replacements while under warranty.
Scenario: Dealer installs the battery possibly not fully charged, then it sits on the floor very slowly (usually 5-10 ma max) drawing down supplying power to the bike's electronics. It's not much of a draw, but the batt goes lower on voltage still the same.
Sales staff crank the engine for a potential customer, runs for minute then off until the next customer. Still lower voltage as the charging system can't replace the demand in that time.
New owner finally takes it home and by then the sulfation and any initial damage has occurred. If the battery fails to maintain 12.6-7 VDC after a full charge or about 9.6 under a prescribed load test it's compromised.
Now with the harness installed it's easy for the dealer and owner to keep it charged.
