Just b/c that is how everything is setup. They don't want people doing it just to save a buck. I understood that they didn't charge anything for factory pickup and other companies do. You could choose to view that fee as the factory pickup charge if you like.
They shut down Factory Tours when they switch over to the new models every year.
Kinda off subject but I was think about all these tours going on and all and wondered how the heck they got all the 2014s (and all other new models past and present) ready for first shipment without even one person seeing a thing during tours at the factory(s).
They got a HD line out at Area 51 or something? Incredible and pretty cool that they can pull that off. Just sayin.

also, the tours are carefully orchestrated, they only show you what they want you to see.

Bike or not, I have been down to the factory at York twice. Mid -June and late July. I only got up to Metal Stamping, but not the rest. I asked them Why...New bikes are being built as they didn't want show the bikes to the Public. Save them for the Annual Dealer's Meeting. I was disappointed and informed the folks there to please make a note that Factory Tours are closed between June XX, 201X to July XX, 20XX. Guess they didn't take my words seriously and continue to upset people who come across the country expecting to see the whole factory and told that they are not going to see.

The bike is being shipped November 1st... maybe I am really off base here, but I doubt highly that is the day it will be making its way down the line. I find it hard to believe the bikes make it through all the stages of the assembly process and final inspection in one day.
Also, are they building the bikes with pre-painted parts or are they assembling the bike then bringing in to paint? I guess I need to go on the tour and find out.

2. the parts are painted separate then the bike is assembled.
the factory is extremely efficient with "just in time" parts inventory. if shipments to the factory (parts) are delayed for any reason, the factory only has enough parts on hand to run the assembly line for 3 hours.

Im a big fan of the bikes but I dont think I'll get much argument on my position the the moco has about the worst customer service experience, terrible dealer network, poor track record rolling out new technology, commonly fails on its obligation to honour its warranty... Its basically the most cynical vehicle manufacturer Ive come across... I pretty much avoid dealerships whenever possible, buy primarily aftermarket parts and all but one of my Harleys has been used... Cant stand giving them a dime if I can help it. There are lots of opportunities for HD to show they give a crap about their customers but they rarely capitolize... This conversation about picking the bike up at the factory just illustrates their habit of failure to give the customer what they want
That sounds like fair customer service to me.
