Just b/c that is how everything is setup. They don't want people doing it just to save a buck. I understood that they didn't charge anything for factory pickup and other companies do. You could choose to view that fee as the factory pickup charge if you like.

They got a HD line out at Area 51 or something? Incredible and pretty cool that they can pull that off. Just sayin.

They shut down Factory Tours when they switch over to the new models every year.

I'm sure someone in the know will chime in but I'm almost positive there is a certain time every year that they cease tours.
also, the tours are carefully orchestrated, they only show you what they want you to see.

Bike or not, I have been down to the factory at York twice. Mid -June and late July. I only got up to Metal Stamping, but not the rest. I asked them Why...New bikes are being built as they didn't want show the bikes to the Public. Save them for the Annual Dealer's Meeting. I was disappointed and informed the folks there to please make a note that Factory Tours are closed between June XX, 201X to July XX, 20XX. Guess they didn't take my words seriously and continue to upset people who come across the country expecting to see the whole factory and told that they are not going to see.

Bmw does it for their cars.... Maybe for their bikes too?

Also, are they building the bikes with pre-painted parts or are they assembling the bike then bringing in to paint? I guess I need to go on the tour and find out.
1. the bike leaves the assembly line, goes to test where they hook it to a computer and run it up to 85 mph thru the gears several times, analyze the computer output and if it passes, put it in line to load it on a truck. The trucks are then staged in the parking lot. So in one day, it goes from bare frame to the truck for delivery.

2. the parts are painted separate then the bike is assembled.

the factory is extremely efficient with "just in time" parts inventory. if shipments to the factory (parts) are delayed for any reason, the factory only has enough parts on hand to run the assembly line for 3 hours.

I pretty much avoid dealerships whenever possible, buy primarily aftermarket parts and all but one of my Harleys has been used... Cant stand giving them a dime if I can help it. There are lots of opportunities for HD to show they give a crap about their customers but they rarely capitolize... This conversation about picking the bike up at the factory just illustrates their habit of failure to give the customer what they want
My customer service experience with HD and the dealer includes buying the chrome lower forks and three years later the left one developed a spot where the chrome was bubbling. I showed the dealer who installed it, reminding him that I chose the HD kit instead of having mine chromed because of the reputation of HD's chrome, and he said he would check on it. About three days later he called to schedule a warranty repacement.

That sounds like fair customer service to me.
