Opinions on trans service "job"
About 900 miles ago I had the oil/trans service done at a local shop. Anyhow, upon hearing about SYN3 problems in transmissions I bought full synthetic 75W90 gear oil, set out to do my own wrenching, and found concerns with with work the Cycle shop did:
1. I found half of the oring hanging out when I went to remove the bolt.
2. Instead of replacing the oring they gooped up the threads with white plumber PIPE sealant (the threads were fine). The bolt was only torqued to 1-2 ft/lbs. Can the goop hold a trans bolt in for 5K miles?
3. I'd estimate that only 10 oz of mixed gear oil and motor oil was in the trans -- I did keep what was drained out. It felt like synthetic. Would the oil leak out under heat/pressure but not on the garage floor?
I cleaned the mag/bolt and all threads, replaced the oring with new, and torqued to 16ft/#. no problems with the threads, no gasket hanging out.
What would you do in this case? Is this a case of idiot mechanic, making do with what's in the shop, judgement errors, ??? too trusting? Take the oring to the next HOG meeting for a SHOW and TELL .... ????

GUESS WHAT? I got it,s twin! I changed the trans. oil in my 06 Ultra last week and it is exactly like the your picture and description of it. But I used Redline Shockproof oil in mine, with my local dealer,s mechanics blessing. Under his breath he recommend it to all the people he knows. oops, telling trade secrets.

Can't comment about the gook on the treads, although it won't hurt, should have been torqued. The O ring looks like it might have been the old, use the old one again trick. Hard to tell, that might have happened when they used a new one. Either way, you can do it yourself now, but in the future if you should want use their services again, mention that you would like a new O ring and the bolts torqued down correctly.

Lesson learned, If you want it done right the first time , do it yourself. Ask questions, buy a manual and be sure of what you get in the future. It isn't the first time that someone got shorted some oil or professional practices by a shop and it woun't be the last either.

RE: Opinions on trans service "job"
the O ring seal SUCKS!!! keep a bunch of extra o-rings on hand!!!
why couldnt they come out with a shouldered bolt and a flat teflon washer like on a cars oil pan!!
and what about the Prim'y drain screw,,, pipe threads?? another snafu!!!
be advised to watch carefully,, and dont over tighten!!!
if you use the teflon pipe thread sealant, make sure its compatable with oils
