Default How do stage 1 mods affect mileage?

My 12 Ultra Ltd is stock (for now...). Really happy with the bike, but eventually want to do a stage 1 breathing mod (better breathing intake and exhaust, tuner). - Not really looking for big power gains as much as doing away with the heat and increasing throttle response.

Would probably go with a 2 into 1 exhaust with header system to do away with the catalyst, and a better ac, TTS type tuner.

More curiosity than anything else, but wondering what effect these changes would have on mpg?

I don't ride to save gas - best mileage would be having a restrained right wrist and legal interstate speeds, but that's not happening! And not gonna lose sleep over 38 mpg instead of 40..... Whatever it is is WAY better than my 3/4 ton diesel truck anyway!

Seems like adding more fuel would decrease mpg - a no brainer.... BUT do you get anything back by better combustion, free-er breathing, less back pressure, etc? Also realize that riding style has a big effect on mpg.... But if the bike makes more power so you aren't pegging it all the time, could real world mileage even go up? For example, this engine makes power much "easier" than my old evo RK, so less need to wind it up as often for the same performance....

Again, it's not gonna keep me from making the changes down the road, but was wondering what your before/after figures were if you made these changes. I'll be happy to have less heat on my right thigh and a FEW more HP.....

I have the CVO 110 2012 Road Glide Custom.

I added cams and did pipes and all, including dyno.

I get 40 mpg. Just did a test this weekend to confirm.

I do not know what it got before that! Drat.

Everything else being equal (the right wrist), A "good" stage 1 has always increased MPG for me.

There are so many different configurations of stage 1's, it is easy to have one done that will decrease the MPG.

1 example-

2012 103 CI. Stock was getting 35 mpg

Same bike with Outlaw Hi-Flow A/C installed, True Duals and TTI's installed, dyno tuned by a HD dealer with the SESPT. Got 31 mpg. (noticeably more power than stock)

Same bike, auto-tuned with Power Vision, everything else the same, getting 38 mpg. (noticeably more power than the HD dyno tune)

We do not. Even though we are a Dynojet dealer and could sell them, we choose not to.

Fuel Moto doubles the factory warranty and provide such great Customer Service that we refer people to them.

It is all in the tune. Doesn't matter what tuner. My first tuner dropped mpg by 5 to 6 mpg. After the new power wore off and did some tuning got back what lost plus 2. You really aren't going to be able to get real good at 80+ on the Interstate cruising. It will be about 5 mpg lower than the 55 to 60 cruise. That really isn't that big of a deal to me. I suspect that could change with a cam change and good tune and maybe gear change. I have rode with some guys that could just use a toggle switch for the TBW Idle or wide open.

2012 CVO 110. Stock it got about 38mpg. Now I'm running a Jackpot head pipe, Fatshotz mufflers, and a Powervision and I'm getting 44mpg.

Tune it right and your mileage will go up.

Mine went up from 38 with Vieds/pipes/stock AC to 42 when I finished the stage 1 by adding an Arlen Ness big sucker.
