Default 2014 Air Cleaner vs alternative

Has anyone heard about or seen dyno numbers from the stock 103 with a stock air cleaner vs. the same setup with nothing but the air cleaner changed to something such as the heavy breather? I am curious as to how much better flow the heavy breather would be vs the stock air cleaner on the 2014 FLHX I am going to be picking up next week. If I could save 300 dollars and get comparable flow out of the stock air cleaner, I would like to since I don't think the stocker looks all that bad.

Replace the stock air filter with a K&N filter into your stock aircleaner housing will help with more air flow.
That may be worth 1 or 2 horsepower over stock, if that is the only thing you change on your bike.

HD usually only publishes torque numbers...however the screaming eagle catalog usually has dyno charts for stock vs stage1,2,3 etc "kits".

so that can give a baseline.

I do not have any 2014 model specific info, but the old stock air cleaner housing was good to flow about 140 CFM.

The S/E, Ness and most others flowed from about 225 and on up...which is more than the motor could ever require.
there is no magic to the heavy breather that the others don't have...it is more an appearance package.

I can think of 3 reason I don't want one on my bike:
cost- ( i am cheep and used the $115 Ness big sucker)
looks- it exposes the ugly plug and wiring on the throttle body
comfort- it pushes my rt knee out and I have hit the darn thing with my toe going for the brake ( test rode a bike with one)

In general, a "stage 1" has been good for 7 to 10 horsepower, and i am sure that the numbers will be similar for your stage 1

Mike

Have you though about decatting your headpipe, that with aircleaner and slipon mufflers
will more then likely be the best improvement bar none. The SE Race Tuner and a good
hour or so on the Dyno will make a huge differance, after your few mods are put on.

The new air cleaner on the 14' 103 high output falls in between last year's stock unit and a stage 1 in regard to air flow. The cam is a modified SE255 designed for more useable mid-range torque. The stage 1 heavy breather will be better, but the upgraded 103 is pretty sweet in stock mode.

I'm wondering how much better the high flow is compared to keeping the air cleaner and changing out the back for more flow for 1/2 the price.
Opinions on that are welcome.

Does K&N have an element that works in the new air box?

I had more power with my stock headers (09, no catt from the factory) until I ran auto tune basic about 3 times with my Power vision when I switched to true duals. If you pick the bike up with the mods installed, you won't have a comparison from stock and will blindly accept that it runs really good when it may just be louder than stock and nothing more.
