if the bike died while running and the lights etc stayed on, check the tip over switch- the bracket on those is known to crack and break, leaving the switch dangling on the wires.
on most models it is inboard of the ign. module, above the swingarm
that model is also subject to the ign switch contacts burning out- usually it will display as having to wiggle the switch to get it to work- before it fails completely...esp. if high watt bulbs are used up front

Seems like there was an issue with the main circuit breaker in ’99 and '00 models. Take a look at that...if I remember correctly the remedy was a 50 amp breaker to replace the 40 amp.
