I probably off-base here, but wouldn't there be some environmental concerns with spilling coolant, especially on a regular basis?
No I think theres more of an environmental concern over the older bikes leaking oil on the ground where ever they stop. Especially the 2010 Softail Deluxes, those are the worst offenders.
Design problems often show up during manufacturing. Poor designs lead to manufacturing tolerances that are almost impossible to hold. That is the problem with the twin cam right now. HD needs to completely redesign its motor. Too many parameters are on the edge.

One environmental concern with spilling coolant is that the main ingredient , Ethylene Glycol, can be harmful to children and pets, if ingested. It would be prudent to make certain that children and pets stay away from the spills. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals...ntifreeze.html
I have a new Limited and have had no problems - knock on wood! I don't know what the top of the radiator necks are made of, but Ski Doo snowmobiles had a problem with the plastic necks warping from heat, then the cap leaking and spitting out coolant. Fix for them was an aluminum support ring inside the filler neck, until the company made them stronger. Not sure if it could be similar?
