The first thing that has to go is the cat. As long as it is in place you will never get the sound you are looking for regardless what mufflers you choose.
To get the old time potato-potato sound you will need to replace your fuel injectors with a carburetor, the mufflers with a set of drag pipes and a cam grind that has a high lift and a long duration. It might just be easier to get you and old Sportster with cut offs.
My recommendation is to leave it as is till you save $400 and then buy some slip on mufflers. That will get you down the road till you can afford a head pipe, air cleaner and tuner. Just my opinion-it worked for me.

def leaving it, because i dont have the money now hehe. think ill skip the H-pipe and jump right to a full set when i have the dough. Hopefully by then im not used to this sound .. i really enjoy my bike rumbling lol
also my wife likes knowing when i pull out (ok dont touch that one hahaha!!)
And lose torque and have a bike that sounds like crap.
Take second and watch the video. Do you think it sounds like crap? I have not lost any torque and I think there are some Dyno's floating run to prove the same.
i have a 2013 street glide. bought it, drove it home and cuz the baffles out of the stock slip ons. after putting some miles on it i noticed my leg got hot becuase of the cat. so i cut it and gutted it and welded it up. now it sounds great and cost me nothing. i cant tell any loss of performance at all. id like to get some slip ons down the line but for now, sounds perfect for the price!
